Our focus on residential energy audits stems from our experience. We have been building and remodeling homes in southeast Michigan for well over 30 years. As a journeyman carpenter, and for the last 20 years, designing and building custom homes, I am quite familiar with building energy efficient homes in Michigan. Keeping utility costs down has always been an important part of this process. While it helps to design in energy saving features from the ground up, there are also many ways to lower energy usage in existing structures.
While some building problems may be obvious, others can be more difficult to uncover. An energy audit, using new tools such as a blower door and an infrared camera are a great help. The blower door unit can first establish just how much outside air is leaking into your home, and the infrared camera can help us to find these leaks. They can uncover problems that could otherwise be very difficult to detect. We provide copies of these photos and can discuss solutions to any problems we find.
If you would like references for someone to do the work, we may be able to provide some, or tell you what we may look for when hiring a subcontractor. If you are interested in doing some of the work yourself, or know someone who can help, we can provide advice and tips to help you keep your repair costs down. Many issues, such as sealing air leaks, can be easily repaired; you just have to locate them first. A tube of caulk or a can of foam may be all that is needed.
I am a RESNET home energy rater, a certified infrared thermographer, and a residential builder, licensed in Michigan.
