What We Do
An energy audit gives you the information you need to make your home more efficient, reduce energy usage, and save money on utility bills.  We check for air leaks in the building envelope, and evaluate other areas where energy can be lost, such as insulation, windows, doors, furnaces and water heaters.

Recommendations can then be made on areas that may need attention, and which can give the greatest return on your invesment.  Some things may be simple and inexpensive to fix, like air leaks, and some may require more time and money.  Knowing what you have and what you need is the first step.

Infrared cameras are an efficient and accurate way to gauge where your home is wasting energy.  These cameras are excellent tools for locating areas of concern.  Newer cameras are smaller, lighter, and more sensitive than ever.  They work by sensing very small differences in temperature and displaying this information in a color image.  The camera can then be used to take a standard digital photo to compare with the infrared photo.

We begin an energy audit by walking around the house and doing a general inspection of the exterior of the building. Then a blower door is placed in an exterior door opening.  This essentially is a large fan which blows out and depressurizes the house.  This simulates a wind of about 20 mph, blowing from all directions.  A computer on the blower door gives us an accurate indication of just how much outside air is entering your home through the building envelope.  The interior of the building is scanned with an infrared camera and images are taken of any areas of concern.   The attic and basement or crawl space are also inspected.

The infrared camera may also uncover other issues along the way such as missing or wet insulation, roof leaks, plumbing leaks, leaks in ductwork, and even insects and animals.

The images are copied into a report along with what we found, and any recommendations we may have, and sent to the homeowner via e-mail or hardcopy.
